Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found many other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say early analysis indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior official commented the incident rendered him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
